The essential oils in this category are not 100% naturally pure but nature identical or naturally pure combined with nature identical substances. Since real naturally pure essential oils are becoming more expensive we have produced, together with the producer of our fragrance oils, some essential oils, which are mixed with nature identical substances. These oils are less suitable for aromatherapy. However, they are suitable for cosmetic products and soap.

What das nature identical mean?

It is often much cheaper to create a substance in a laboratory than extracting it from plants. Synthetic substances are sometimes added as E-number to food products.

Synthetic substances are substances which are created in a laboratory. The basic ingredient can be natural, but it is not necessary. A synthetic substance, which is also found in nature is called a nature identical substance.

Solvent extraction is being used for delicate plants and flowers and for parts that yield low amounts of essential oil. Through this process, the non-volatile plant material such as waxes and pigments are also extracted into the essential oil but many experts still consider these oils suitable for aromatherapy.“Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction” is a new method to separate various components from the plant which according to several experts it produces a pure, clean, and safe essential oil while others view it critically. These essential oils are very expensive and hard to find because this method requires expensive equipment.

During the steam distillation process, the material is heated until it produces steam. The steam will be cooled down and will result in a liquid form. In water distillation, the botanical material is completely immersed in water and then is boiled in an airtight vessel. This method protects the oil to be extracted till a certain degree. The water distillation takes more time and is inferior to steam distillation because not all components of the oil stay intact. The more efficient steam distillation results in essential oil due to the combination of heated steam and gentle pressure.

Essential oils that go through the cold pressing process come mainly from citrus fruits. The essential oil from citrus fruits stays at the surface of the peels and can be extract by puncturing or pressing this peel. The whole fruit is pressed mechanically or manually to squeeze out the oil. Manual pressing releases very pure essential oil.Experiment at home with manual cold pressing to produce small amounts of essential citrus oil. Wash and dry the fruit and cut the peel in small pieces. Squeeze out with your fingers and use a bowl to collect the oil. Keep the oil in a small dark glass bottle (with pipette) and use it similar to other citrus oil.

Aromatherapy in ancient timesAlthough nobody exactly knows how or when our ancestors developed an interest in aromatic plants, some archaeological findings suggest an early use of these plants. During excavation of historical graves in Iraq remains of funeral wreaths were found. In ancient civilisations, like Mesopotamia three to four thousand years ago, herbs and spices were used for treatment of illnesses. The healer purified the body and mind of the patient to get rid of bad spirits; the aromatic substances were used to cleanse the environment. They created a healing space around the illness to heal and restore balance. This ancient custom was persisted all around the world. In Peru, special healers were called curen eras (women) and curen eros (men) and used aromatic herbs like incense to cure diseases. In ancient Egypt, there was no difference between a priest and a healer. During excavations of the healing temple Osiris in Abydos on the Nile, a few underground chambers were discovered which all had a hole in the ceiling. Inscriptions show that patients consulted the priests and spent the night in one of these chambers. Incense was burned above the patient and in the morning the dreams were interpreted by the priests who revealed the illness. Fragrance was the key to the subconscious of the patient. In the early days, aromas were also a status symbol; kings, queens and other royals demonstrated their wealth by an excessive use of perfumes. Garlands of aromatic plants like myrtle and mint were used for banquets and the guests carried garlands with fragrant flowers and herbs to stimulate the digestion. In the ancient Egypt people wore perfume cones on their heads, which were impregnated with scents like frankincense. During the feast, these cones, slowly melting, released a sweet aroma. In the ancient Greece and Rome people used a different fragrance for each part of the body which resulted in a diffusing of fragrances when they moved oneself.
The Splendour of Egypt
When the tomb of Tutankhamun was exposed, every sarcophagus turned out to be covered by breath-taking garlands of aromatic flowers and herbs. Fortunately a botanic made pictures and identified the plants before they turned to dust. Amongst these flowers were lotus flowers, long time worshipped as a sacred flower, and lilies. Earthenware jars, filled with cream who contained frankincense, myrrh, nardus and cassia, still spread some scent after being kept for so long in the darkness. For the Egyptians aromas were seen as a connection with the Gods. They were used as incense to burn on altars, as unguents for the Pharaoh during life and as embalming after death. Ingredients like cedar wood and frankincense were used to create perfumes and cosmetic products. A famous recipe of perfume with 16 ingredients, called “kyphi” was preserved and was known for reducing fears and understanding dreams. This old method of reducing fears with aromas is similar to the use of essential oils to improve one’s mood in aromatherapy.Aromatherapy in different ancient culturesMany cultures have old traditions in using aromas. They were used in medicine, for perfumes, cosmetics or other religious ceremonies. The same plant was often used for multiple applications – in India patchouli is used for treating skin problems, for the base of incense, for perfumes and moth repellent. India has aromatic traditions which have existed for over a thousand years. The exotic aroma of sandalwood is used for perfume ingredients, cosmetics and incense. It is burned during Hindu funerals to purify the mind of the deceased. Many divine sculptures are washed and rubbed with ointment with aromatic oils, covered with flowers and purified with incense. The traditional medicine of India, Ayurveda, makes extensive use of herbs, spices and essential oils like cardamom, to prevent infections and balance body and mind.

About four thousand years ago in China they used cinnamon powder and cassia for the preparation of incense. The Chinese tradition of herbal medicine is ancient and is based on a wide range of plants, like angelica root and camphor. A modern Chinese botanist has knowledge of hundreds of aromatic herbs and spices. From the ancient Arabic culture many aromas were brought to Western Europe; merchants discovered routes to the East and spread plants like the orange tree and the rose, all around the world. The distillation is attributed to the Arabs, when heat is used to extract essential oil from aromatic material. Abu Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, a remarkable physicist, philosopher and scientist from the first century BC, created a simplified form of this technique. Now, two thousand years later, most of the essential oils are still produced by this same method.Modern aromatherapy
In the 1930’s the French perfume chemist R.M. Gattefosse created the term ‘aromatherapy’ after he treated a burn wound with essential lavender oil. He was amazed by the fast healing and published a book about the healing powers of essential oils. Until then, the popularity of essential oils was very variable. In the 16th and 17th century, new distillery methods made the essential oils more available to a larger public. During the plague, spices like cloves were used to disinfect. In Western Europe, in the 17th and 18th century an increasing interest in chemical medicines resulted in a decline of medical use of herbs and essential oils. However, in the south of France, the perfume industry continued to distillate lavender and rose until the 19th century. A French report mentions that employers of the perfume industry have lower risk of tuberculosis but at that time nobody realised that the exposure to essential oils was the most important factor of protection. In the twentieth century in France the door to aromatherapy was opened for Gattefosse and other pioneers like Dr. Jean Valnet, a scientist who studied the antiseptic effect of essential oils and Marguerite Maury, who introduced the use of essential oils in massages. In Great Brittain the book of Robert Tisserens, The Art of Aromatherapy (1975) generated an interest in this topic, which led to a larger audience. At this moment, aromatherapy is well known all over de world. It is very popular in English-speaking countries. There is a growing interest in the Far East and South-America and it is being applied increasingly in European countries, especially combined with beauty treatments. The style of the United States and Great Britain, is different from the aesthetic approach; in a professional treatment, three essential oils are selected and mixed with a vegetable oil and massaged into the skin of the entire body. The selection of the essential oils is determined by the physical and emotional state of the client, to make sure they can relax and get more energy.

The second part of the word aromatherapy identifies with a type of action. In which way do we apply these natural fragrances? Essential oils can enter the body in two different ways. First via respiration and the lungs. We just described the sense of smell through the nose but we also breathe through our mouth. Essential oils are inhaled through the mouth and respiratory tract to the lungs. A good example is the stimulating scent of Eucalyptus, which opens up the airways, stimulates breathing and mobilizes mucus in order to cough. The second way is through skin. Our skin has many layers: the cells lying at the surface overlap each other like small microscopic rooftiles and the deeper layers are generously provided with blood vessels, nerves, sweat- and oil glands. Both in massages and bathing the essential oils come in close contact with your skin. By the temperature of the bathwater or frictional heat caused by the massage, miniscule essential oil molecules penetrate through top skin layer in the blood stream. From there the body absorbs the oil wherever it’s required and excretes the oil through the kidneys. A massage with Rosemary for your painful back stimulates the blood supply, warms up the muscles, and relieves stiffness. Essential oils can be divided into different groups depending on their therapeutic action. Calming oils like lavender and orange blossom help to relieve physical pain, muscle pain, headache and have calming influences on the body and mind. Stimulating oils like cardemon or black pepper enhances energy, warms up a poor circulation and make you feel physically fit. Refreshing oils like peppermint or rosemary are stimulating, cleanse the body, eliminate toxins and increases your concentration levels. Citrus oils like lemon or mandarin stimulates digestion, makes the body resilient and helps to overcome depression.

The use of aromatic plants is nothing new. People have been fascinated by aromas for over a thousand years. During classical antiquity natural aromas were used to manufacture incense, medicines, cosmetics and perfumes. The plants which produced these fragrances were viewed as a link to the spiritual world, which nowadays still is a strong belief in certain cultures. The aromatherapy of today interprets the subtleties of these fragrances differently because the emphasis has shifted to mental influence and the therapeutic effects of essential oil. The result of that– a sense of clarity and a better mood– let aromatherapy be a perfect antidote to the tensions people experience nowadays. The fact that our lives are more and more affected by stress, makes aromatherapy more useful than ever. The growing interest led to the fact that aromatherapy has a different meaning for different people. Many aromatherapy practitioners view this as a subtle art which has a profound effect on the body and mind. Botanists and biochemists regard essential oils as complex combinations of molecules. People with a scientific approach see aromatherapy as a use of sophisticated bio-active ingredients and for a perfumer, the essentials oils are the elements that build the perfume. All of the above is true – aromatherapy reflects the aspects of art and science, perfume and psychology, biochemistry and botany. In simple terms: the definition of aromatherapy consists of two words – ‘aroma’ and ‘therapy’. ‘Aroma’ refers to the sense of smell which receives and interprets chemical signals. ‘Therapy’ implicates that someone receives the aroma to create a beneficial effect. In the next pages we will discuss these aspects in detail. The power of scent Often, we are not aware of our sense of smell: most people only notice this when they cannot smell temporarily. When we have a cold, we notice that our food doesn’t taste like anything. Because our taste is influenced for 80 % by our sense of smell and 20% by our taste buds. If someone loses his sense of smell permanently, this can lead to severe depression. Why? Our sense of smell mostly defines the way we experience our world and enriches our life. Our nose detects scents when we breathe which causes neural impulses who constantly send signals to our brain. These reactions take place thousands of times a day, even if we are asleep. Fragrances are very important for our sense of wellbeing. Not only do they influence the parts of our brain that affect our moods, emotions or feelings, they also influence the parts that regulate the body’s chemical balance. In other words, fragrances with a calming effect, cause internal, chemical changes which will relax the body. The more vitalizing fragrances stimulate the brain and has invigorating and energizing qualities. Some impulses picked up by the sense of smell, affect parts in our brain that will extend beyond our consciousness; this implicates that reactions to fragrances will be expressed non-verbal sounds like ‘mmmm’ or ‘ew!’ This suggests that our reactions to fragrances are instinctively, ‘good’ or ‘awful’. Small children show this behaviour a lot, if it smells good they want to grab it and if it smells unpleasant they turn away from it.In adults, strong instinctive reactions to fragrances come from associative memories. In the novel of the French writer Marcel Prouts A la recherche du temps perdu (Looking for lost time) the scent – a madeleine dipped in lime-tree blossom tea– plays a central role because this scent recalls detailed memories from his early childhood. If you have never actively noticed your sense of smell before, it’s nice to give some attention to it. For example, go for a walk outside and see how many different fragrances you can discover. You will be surprised by the number.

At SoapQueen we mix the colorants ourselves in order to guarantee freshness.

The water-soluble colorants are suitable for melt & pour soap, cosmetics and fizz products.

For coloring bath salts we advice to solve the colorant in Sodium carbonate first.

These colorants are directly purchased from the producer. Due to this SoapQueen offers an interesting price in case of larger purchases. Dry pigments have a shelf-life of 10 years. Mixed colors have a shelf-life of about two years with the right preservatives.

For larger purchases or re-sellers we always advice to buy freshly mixed colorants.

SQ Metallic synthetic mica pigments can be used for all cosmetic purposes.Synthetic Fluorphlogopite is the synthetic version of the super commonly used mineral, Mica. The advantage of being synthetic is that it has a more consistent quality, fewer impurities and an even lower heavy metal content than Mica (not that Mica's heavy metal content is high). It is also more transparent and has improved light reflection. The two main use cases for Synthetic Fluorphlogopite is being used neat as a superior "filler" or skin tone enhancer or it can also serve as a base for multi-layered, composite pigments such as pearl effect pigments where it is coated with one or more layers of metal oxide, most commonly titanium dioxide.

Tips for mixing colors in melt & pour soap.Fact: The transparent and white soap basis are identical, except for the pigment powder (Titanium Dioxide) that was added in the production process of white soap. Depending on the desired color it is in some cases necessary to combine both soap bases.

Whitening the soap: It is also possible to whiten the soap by adding extra Titanium Dioxide. This can be necessary in case of discoloration due to the use of fragrance oils.

To simplify the mixing one can best mix the pigment powder with liquid glycerin first.

Bright or dark colors: For bright or dark colors it is recommended to use a lot of transparent soap and little to none white soap.

Light or pastel colors: For light or pastel colors it is recommended to use a lot of white soap and little to none transparent soap.

Some example formulas: black soap: 95% transparent basis + 5% white basis + black pigment.

brown soap: 90% transparent basis + 10% white basis + brown pigment.

Brown is a mixture of red, yellow and blue. By adding extra blue one obtains a darker brown.

dark red soap: 90% up to 95% transparent basis + 5% up to 10% white basis + red pigment or dark red colorant on water base (+ optionally a very little amount of black pigment)

(in case the soap must be less dark, leave out the black powder and/or add more white soap)

bright pink soap (fuchsia): 75-85%% transparent basis + 15-25% white basis + pink or red colorant

dark blue soap: 80-90% transparent basis + 10-20% white basis + blue colorant + black pigment.

Dissolve the coloring pigment in a separate mixing cup at a ratio of 1 in 10 (10%), wherein the wax temperature during this mixing contains 80-90 degrees Celsius.

Add the coloring pigment when the wax is completely melted and has a temparature of about 80 degrees Celsius. Stir well until the mass obtains a nice homogenous mixture. Stir well before pouring the soap in order to keep a clean and even color.

In order to color your candles, color pigment must be added. The more colorant you add, the darker the candle will be. Good quality color pigments give a good result! Use 1g color pigment/KG paraffin as a basis for coloring the mass of candles. In case you prefer dipping the candle, use 2g color pigment/KG paraffin.

Candlewick is made from woven cotton which contributes to the burning quality. The shaped sustainers are made from the same material and covered with a layer of wax. There are different sizes. The size you need depends on the size of your candle. In the diagram below you can find which wick to use according to the diameter of the candle you wish to pour. The required sizes can differ from scented candles due to the addition of certain fragrance oils. Often a different size than indicated is needed when using natural waxes like Soy Wax for your candle. It is advised to test every new formula.

Melt casting wax at a temperature between 60°C and 90°C. Pouring out at low temperature gives a rough effect and at higher temperatures the candle will be smoother. Add 5 - 15% stearin for whiter and stronger candles. Stearin also takes care of shrinking, which simplifies the releasing of the candle from the mold. In case it is still difficult to remove the candle from the mold you can spray the mold with solvent. Prepare the mold with the suitable wick: the thicker the candle; the thicker the wick. During the solidification the wax will shrink. A shrink hole, which cannot be avoided will arise. We do have a solution for this shrink hole by pouring extra wax in de mold; prick several holes around the wick during the solidification mode and fill them with wax. Repeat this (if necessary) several times. This will limit the shrink hole. The amount of shrinking depends on the recipe, the temperature and the sizes of the mold. BewarenBewaren

Melt the dipping wax at a temperature between 70°C and 73°C. Dip the wick in the paraffin and let it completely absorb with dipping wax. When there are no air bubbles visible, the wick is completely imbibed with wax (after approximately 20 seconds). At this point the dipping can start; dip evenly, wait 1 second and pull up in one smooth movement. Between every dip the candle needs to drop its temperature up to about 35°C (wait 1 minute). When the dipping have been interrupted for too long and the candle has turned cold, extend the time of the first dipping to +/- 5 seconds. Repeat the dipping until the desired thickness is reached.

Paraffin is a "waste" product from the fossil fuel oil. Chemically it is a saturated hydrocarbon, extracted from the fossil raw material oil and is stripped of potentially harmful substances, using modern, environmentally friendly cleaning methods.
After this process, a high-refined end product is left which is subject to continuous quality control and is from a toxicological (*) point of view no safety concern for public health. Na natural features are characterized by proper biodegradability. Positive features:- Paraffin is not harmful to the environment;
- Free from harmful substances;
- No threat to the food industry;
- Does not contain animal fats;
- Harmless to health;
- Continuous, guaranteed quality.

Processing of the paraffin wax:

+/- 18°C is the best environmental temperature in order to pour and dip candles.
Before paraffin can be processed to candles it is necessary to convert the solid form of the product to a liquid one, meaning that the paraffin has to be melted. We recommend to heat the paraffin au bain marie if possible. This is faster, safer and better for the paraffin and the equipment. In case it is not possible to heat the paraffin indirectly, it should be melted gradually. Furthermore we advise to use equipment with a adjustable thermostat. Temperature is in fact a very important aspect during the production of candles.

Stearin ensures shrinking and strengthens the candle. Also it improves its fire properties. Add 5 - 15% stearin to the casting wax during the production. This will simplify the removal of the candle from the mold as well as it makes the candle stronger and whiter. Many candle producers use their own recipe. Stearin can also be used purely which gives the candle a beautiful "stone effect"; heat the stearin up to 65°C, add the desired color pigment (0,1 - 0,3%) and pour in a silicon mold. For this addition one always needs a special stearin wick! When colored dining candles are dipped in pure stearin (75°C), it will give the candle an amazing crackle effect. Never process pure stearin in materials of aluminum.

Marble wax is an extra dip-/decoration wax which you can use for a artisan/hand made effect. The "crystal effect" that can be reached is different for every candle.
The colored candle can be dipped or poured with "pure" marble wax or with the addition of approximately 2% color pigment (depending on the color).
The temperature should be around 70 - 80°C. The marble wax should not be mixed with other types of waxes because it will lose its "crystal structure". Make sure you always heat marble wax in stainless steel material!

Candles can be colored by "dipping" or thoroughly. Our colors are suitable for both methods.
The color dose depends on the surface roughness of the candle, the nature of the color, the cross-section of the candle and in case of dipping the temperature and of course the desired end result. The color pigments can be added directly to the to be colored mass with a stir bar or even better stirred with an electrical stirrer (mixer). Right after this you can directly start editing/processing the mass. Guideline amount of addition:

Dipping at 80º C
1 time dipping = ca. 1,5% (15 grams per kg wax).
2 times dipping = ca. 1,0% (10 grams per kg wax).
In order to reach the desired effect, one can increase or decrease the amount. Darker colors can carry a higher concentration.Thorough coloring
Add ca. 0,1% - 0,2% p/kg (1 - 2 grams per kg wax).
In order to reach the desired color, one can increase or decrease the amount. Darker colors can carry a higher concentration.Guideline processing:
1. Weigh accurately, by means of a scale, the necessary amount of color pigment. Or count the amount of the to be processed color tablets.
2. Dissolve the color pigment in a separate mixing cup with a ratio of 1 : 10 wherein the temperature of the wax while mixing is about 90˚C.
3. Mix with an electrical mixer to a homogenous mass until the color pigment is completely melted and evenly distributed in the wax.
4. Pour this concentrate to the other to be colored wax and mix again until you obtain a homogenous mass.
5. Control if the desired color is obtained before starting with the production of the candles.

The burning heart of the candle

The wick, is a very important part of the candle. The right choice of the wick contributes to the incineration. For almost every type of candle exists the right wick.

There are three main types of wicks:

- Flat wick

For dip- and casting candles.

- Round wick

Especially suitable for the in beeswax dipped or in beeswax honeycomb rolled candles.

Note! These wicks have a top and bottom. Always place the wick with the top side in the candle. The topside is noticeable by its v-shaped braid.

- Special wick

I.a. wax wicks are equipped with a wick sustainer. The wick sustainer prevents the wick from tipping over and simplifies the application of the wick in the mold or jar.

The wick determines the size of the flame and the fire mirror of the candle. The fire mirror is always round. A candle with a different form will therefore never entirely burn. The rests of paraffin can of course be re-melted and used as filling paraffin for example!

Choice of wick:

There is not a recipe for the right choice of your wick. In case you produce a large series of candles, we advise to test your wick choice!

THERMOMETER
You need a thermometer which covers a scale of 100 °C in order to measure the temperature of your melting wax. An ordinary home thermometer is sufficient in case you use plastic molds as they cannot stand a temperature higher than 82 degrees. Although candles can burn easily without using a thermometer, many problems can be avoided by controlling the temperature before pouring the wax into the mold. SCALE
This is needed in order to measure the amount of wax and other materials you use. A digital home scale of 1g up to 2kg is ideal. STIRRING
A wooden spoon is needed in order to stir the paraffin, the stearin and the color pigments well, once it has reached the right temperature. It is important to stir frequently since the color pigments are heavier than the paraffin so they will sink. A tablespoon or soup ladle with a spout is convenient to easily remove the wax from the melting pan. MEASURE AND POUR CAN
Spoon your melted wax in the can in order to pour the wax into the mold. The pouring is easier when using a pour can. We advise using a metal can because it is then subjected to the least temperature loss. CANDLE MOLDS
Most candles are created in molds, which exist in many shapes and sizes. You can find them in the more professional hobby shops. Special shapes can be created with molds which consist of two parts (spherical for example). Molds do not have to be expensive: take a look at kitchen equipment, also an empty milk carton, yoghurt jars, baking molds or other packing material can serve as mold. The only requirement is that the mold should be able to bear a temperature of 85°C or higher and that the inside of the mold is smooth so you can easily remove the candle. SKEWERS
Use these to secure the wick on the upper side of the mold. In most of the plastic molds a notch can be found in which you can fix the skewer. This will ensure that your wick will stay in the center of the candle. HAIRDRYER OR BLOWLAMPS
Both can be used in order to hide flaws in the candle. You can use a hairdyer to pre-heat the mold in order to keep the wax hot as long as possible. This will result in a beautiful shiny candle. Be careful with plastic when using a blowlamp, these will start melting if you point at the plastic.

CLEANING OF MATERIAL
An efficient way to clean the used materials is to collect them in an old rectangular baking pan on a baking tray of your oven. Cover the baking tray with baking paper or aluminum. Cans can be best placed straight so the wax stays in the can, shapes can be best put upside down. Set your oven at 80°C in convection function and your timer for 60 minutes. Keep household paper at hand. Remove the cleaned equipment from the oven after 60 minutes and dry them immediately with household paper. Speed is a must since the molted paraffin starts to solidify as soon as it gets in contact with air so remove your equipment piece by piece from the oven. Catch the liquid paraffin from the oven tray in an old bowl and remove the baking paper.

Hypoallergenic
The term hypoallergenic, which you can find on the label of a cosmetic product, suggests that that certain product has little to no risk of allergic reactions. The term is not legally defined and therefore free for use. The term does not provide any guarantee for people with allergies. A so-called "list of ingredients" is a much more reliable guarantee. Consumers who are aware of their allergic reactions to certain ingredients can, based on the legal compulsory listing of ingredients on the product, decide for the products that are most suitable to them.

Dermatologically tested
Dermatologically tested means that the manufacturer had the product tested on volunteers by dermatologists. The term does not indicate the result of the test. Nothing is legally defined concerning the size of the group of volunteers or the quality of the research. Meaning that the term dermatologically tested has no legal content and can be used freely.

PH neutral
With the term PH neutral it is indicated that the product possesses an acidity, which is close to the acidity of the skin. The term is seen a lot on soap, bath and shower products. For the tolerability of these products other factors play a more important role than the PH value. It is for example important what soap or fragrance is used; PH neutral does not reveal anything about these factors.

Natural Basis
Although most of the products, which are claimed to have a natural basis, are not even produced on "natural basis", there are some exceptions of products which are in fact based on a natural basis. However, this term has no valuable meaning. What is the benefit for example to make a product with a natural main ingredient, in order to fill it with synthetic substances afterwards? The term 100% natural is certainly a valuable reference.

Rare products methods
There are for example soaps, which are produced from Extra Virgin olive oil (first cold pressing). During the process, the oil is cooked from eight to 40 hours. It is very well likely that many significant features of the high quality oil get lost during this process. The only question that remains is ... was it Extra Virgin in the first place?

Palm oil is a versatile vegetable oil, which has been processed in thousands of products. The production of palm oil is often paired with major problems for humans and the environment. For the construction of plantations lots of tropical forest was cut. The plantations cause lots of pollution, the working conditions are poor and the rights of indigenous peoples are often flouted. Friends of the Earth wants the Dutch government and companies to get involved in ensuring that someone puts an end to this.

The palm grows around the equator in South East Asia, Latin America and Africa. The largest producers of palm oil are Indonesia and Malaysia; together they provide 84 per cent of the supply on the world market. In Indonesia and Malaysia vast areas have been stripped off rain forest in order to construct palm oil plantations. The last decennia the palm oil area has grown from 2 million hectare to over 5 million in Indonesia. The Indonesian rain forest is home to a great amount of species: 10% of all plant species worldwide; 12% of all mammalian species; 16% of reptiles and 17% of all birds. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the forest cover has declined sharply in Indonesia and Malaysia. If this trend continuous, it is estimated that all rainforest on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan will be gone in the near future. Deforestation does not only endanger the biodiversity, but also threatens the culture and livelihoods of indigenous peoples. However, their voice is not heard when new palm oil plantations are in construction. The continuous boosting of biomass production in palm oil exporting economies, increase the irreparable damage they often inflict. www.rspo.org

Soap is created through the interaction of oils and fats with alkali, resulting in natural glycerin and sodium salts of fatty acids. Many commercial soap manufacturers remove the glycerin, but SQ-Natural soaps retain it. This natural glycerin hydrates the skin. Various oils, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and sunflower oil, are combined to create a mild, foamy soap that cleanses without drying the skin.Soap works through surfactants that break down dirt and makeup from the skin. However, many commercial soaps contain irritants like perfume and chemical ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate, which can cause skin issues. SQ-Natural soaps are free from chemical fragrances and only contain therapeutic essential oils, which help address skin concerns like dryness or oiliness.SQ-Natural soaps are made using the cold process method, preserving the natural benefits of the ingredients. This process keeps the valuable fatty acids intact, promoting healthier skin. Commercial soaps often use synthetic additives and remove glycerin, which can lead to dry skin. SQ-Natural soaps avoid this and offer gentle cleansing without harmful chemicals. In summary, natural cold-processed soaps like SQ-Natural are better for the skin, free from harmful chemicals, and rich in nourishing glycerin and essential oils.

About pH value

The pH is a scale used to specify the acidity of a watery solution. At room temperature, 25°C, a neutral watery solution has a pH of 7. Neutral is neither acidic nor basic.
At 25 °C, solutions with a pH less than 7 are acidic, and basic solutions have a pH greater than 7 and are therefore lower in acidity. There are a lot of questions, claims and contrasts concerning pH and our skin. While one company claims that their product is “pH neutral for the skin”, another company claims that their products are manufactured without questionable chemicals in the “pH neutral” product. Both companies have a commercial interest in the right explanation. So how does it work? The real fraud about pH, soap and skin, is based on science.
And remember that most of the claims in the cosmetic industry are utter nonsense.Your skin produces a mildly acidic film to protect itself to bacteria, viruses and other contaminants. This is called the Acid Mantle. Because it is acid, the most effective way to clean the skin, is with the use of an alkaline foaming system (soap!).
After cleaning, the skin directly starts to secrete the mantle. Within 20 minutes it is again on one third of the original power and fully recovered within 2-3 hours. Of course this can differ from person to person and there are also rare cases with extremely sick people, where this system fails.
In other words, do not worry about that. There are really no health reasons to choose one product over the other, merely based on the pH, when we presume that the pH values are between 3,30 (like an orange) and 10 ( piece of soap). It is interesting to note that the mildest cleaner you can use -rightly manufactured handmade soap – also has the highest pH value of approximately 10.
The last years we received hundreds of declarations that eczema, dermatitis and other skin problems disappear after using the handmade soap for a couple of days , so don’t let anyone fool you that mildness and a low pH value are the same, that is just not true!Bad quality and mass produced pieces of soap usually contain free alkali, which result in hard and drying soap. The manufacturers allow that there are remaining alkali in the soap. This is good for business but bad for your skin. It finds every last bit of natural oils of the skin and turns these into soap, what makes your skin dry and extremely clean. A high percentage of coconut oil in combination with common additions can also make mass production soap irritating to the skin.

The reason that this issue (which will be ignored) has become a marketing war, is that detergent ( read the discrepancy in: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) has a pH that is more acid than soap products.
Market traders use this as an advantage to promote their products.
About 12% of all people is hypersensitive to detergent. Others to preservatives, synthetic by-products, perfumes, and colorants used mass produced soap and detergent. But how do you, as a concerned consumer who cares and reads this, make a sensible decision to buy a product. We come from the Earth. We consist of substances of the earth; the chemical groups and materials.
Our bodies are able or unable to process these natural chemical groups, which exist in plants, animals and minerals in our environment.

Did you know that 99% of liquid soaps are not actually soap?

They are cocktails made of synthetic detergents that, in the long-term, can cause many harmful outcomes on the human body. But this fact is denied worldwide because of the billions of incomes for large multinationals.

Sodium Lauryl (Laureth) Sulfate (SLS) is the most important foaming substance in the western society. You will find that shampoos, bath gels, car cleaning supplies, detergents, pieces of soap, laundry detergents etc. all contain SLS. It is a wetting, dispersing, emulsifying, degreasing agent and a foam booster.

It also increases the skin’s permeability about 100 times. It is being used in lotions to increase the absorption of micronutriets through the skin. Which is a great danger!

These molds are not as flexible as rubber molds. With the right technique the soap is easily and quickly removable from the mold.INSTRUCTIONS MELT & POUR SOAP MOLDS:

∙ The melt & pour soap must be completely cooled.
∙ The longer the soap was hardened, the easier it is to remove it from the mold.
∙ First let a little bit of air slip between the soap and the mold by pushing the side of the mold slightly with your finger, finger nail or just like in the video with a pinch.
∙ Turn the mold around with the upper side down and push on the mold.
∙ Combine this with very soft squeeze- and bending movements of the mold.
∙ You will notice that the air divides itself over the soap and the mold.
∙ The soap will release automatically if the air is distributed everywhere between the soap and mold.
∙ It is normal that it takes 5 up to 10 seconds per shape.
∙ With some practice you will easily master the technique and you will be able to remove the soap in no-time!

Step 1Weigh two equal parts of silicone. Put the silicone on a greased piece of baking paper. This ensures that the silli does not stick to the surface. Also grease your hands. Step 2 Knead and mix the paste to one homogenous mass. No white should be visible anymore. Step 3Press the object carefully but tight in the ‘silli plastique ©’.Make sure that all details can be absorbed well. All shapes can be pressed in the silli. Think of beads, chains and cameos etcetera. Step 4Let the mold rest at room temperature for two hours. Take the object carefully from the mold. Let the mold rest for another two to three hours depending on the size and thickness. Putting the silicone in the oven for one hour at 100 degrees Celsius can accelerate this. Ensure that the silicones are completely elaborated.Wash the mold in the dishwasher before they can be used. INSTRUCTIONS (printable)

There's always plenty of soap in a kit to add additional variants to the party:

Create your own soap sponge:

Put about 300 ml melted transparent melt & pour soap in one large mixing cup of 1 liter.Add 20 to 40 drops of fragrance oil and stir well. Take a fruit sponge and dip it in the melt & pour soap. The remaining soap in the mixing cup can easily be re-melted in the microwave. Let the soapy sponge drip in the mixing cup. When the sponge stops dripping, hang or let it dry on a tablemat. When the sponge is completely hardened, you have finished your own soap sponge, lots of shower fun!

REC03

I use this clay mask as shampoo, to wash my hair once every 5-6 days, but you can also use it as a hairmask. This hairmask has improved my hairgrowth and given back my curls after it was damaged and affected by medicines. I use this myself for 2.5 years. Ingredients:∙ 25 gram bentonite clay (food grade)
∙ half a teaspoon unrefined oil; aloe vera oil, olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil or castor oil.
∙ 5 drops of essential oil (by choice)
∙ 150ml (= 5oz) demineralized water

Method:Make sure you use a glass or plastic bowl and fork due to the absorption of metal residues. Add water to the claypowder. Give it a light stir until the powder has absorbed all the water and there exists a lumpy mixture. Then add the oils and mix this. Leave this mixture for about 10 minutes and stir again. Repeat this once or twice until the mixture is smooth.Use: For long hair, over the shoulders (30cm from the neck). Wet your hair and apply the hairmask from the head to the ends and piece by piece, just like your hair is dyed. Make sure the mask is well applied to your scalp. Massage the shampoo on your head so that every piece is covered.Leave for 30 minutes and rinse well. Kind regards,Katerina

∙ 100 g transparent pour soap
∙ 70% alcohol
∙ pigment solution
∙ perfume oil for pour soap
∙ soap mold
∙ soap cutter
∙ aluminium foil

Method:∙ Step 1. Take a large piece of aluminium foil and fold a square “cake bottom”. In this you will pour two layers of soap, so ensure that the sides of the square are high enough.
∙ Step 2. Take 250 gram white pour soap, divide into small pieces and let melt completely.
∙ Step 3. The white pour soap does not need to be coloured, give this soap a nice fragrance of choice (perfume oil
∙ Step 4. Spray your homemade cake bottom with alcohol. Pour all the white soap in the mold. (Let dry for about 7 minutes)
∙ Step 5. Take 150 gram white pour soap, cut in small parts and let melt completely.
∙ Step 6. Colour this pour soap with PIGMENT SOLUTION. In case you use a colour on water base, it will run through the entire soap, which would be a shame.
∙ Step 7. Once you have coloured this soap, you can add a fragrance as well.
∙ Step 8. Spray the previous (white) layer of soap with alcohol and then pour the coloured layer of soap on top of it. (Leave for 10 minutes
∙ Step 9. Now you can remove the soap carefully from the foil. Place on a flat working space and roll tightly so that you have a nice soap roll.
∙ Step 10. Cut the soap roll into thin slices = 1 cm per slice (you will notice this looks exactly like candy)
∙ Step 11. Take a soap mold of choice and take the right amount of transparent soap (melt this)
∙ Step 12. Add fragrance to your transparent soap, NO COLOUR
∙ Step 13. Pour the soap in the desired mold and spray the surface with alcohol.
∙ Step 14. Spray the soap candy with a thin layer of alcohol and let drop carefully intro the transparent pour soap. (if desired you can replace or move the “candy” with a wooden skewer)
∙ Step 15. Spray the surface with alcohol once more and let dry well.
∙ Step 16. Remove the soap from the mold and enjoy your creation!

Method:Take 40 gram mild olive oil ( because of the mild scent ) and melt this together with the 80 gram coco oil ( for coconut lovers preferably with scent ) Mix well with a mixer for about three minutes and place in the fridge for five minutes. Ad 1 to 2 levelled teaspoons of corn starch half way to improve the absorbing on the skin and for a less greasy feeling. So far it is an edible version. For the ones who like more or different fragrances, essential oil of choice can be added. I like to use pineapple and / or coconut because it smells like pina colada! But this one is not for eating or tasting!
The butter has a light SPF factor due to the oil that was used. However, for the light or not sun-familiar skin you will have to use accurate sunscreen. It is a lovely skin and hair care product for after tanning as well. The butter can be used perfectly as a massage product.

Material:

∙ 5,3 oz ( 150 gram ) sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
∙ 2,3 oz ( 65 gram ) citric acid
∙ 1,6 oz ( 45 gram ) corn flour / corn starch
∙ 1,4 oz ( 40 gram ) sweet almond oil
∙ 20 drops purple waterbased colouring
∙ 20 drops lavender oil
∙ 1 full tablespoon dried lavender flowers
∙ bath bomb mold

Method:

Mix together citric acid and baking soda in a bowl . Make sure they’re mixed thoroughly with a whisk. Add the colouring and mix it together. Take a separate small bowl, put the almond oil in and add the essential oil. This prevents that the essential oil will vaporize.
Mix the almond with the dry ingredients. Finally you can add the lavender.
The mixture now looks like wet sand. When you can squeeze together some of the mixture in your hands and it just doesn't fall apart, it's just right.
Pack the mixture tightly into your mold(s). If you’re using a two-part mold, then slightly overfill each half of the mold, and press them together tightly. Don’t twist, just press. Hold the bath bomb with one hand and gently tap on the top of the mold with a spoon to release the bath bomb. Lift the top of the mold, or twist gently. Turn the bath bomb around and tap the other half and remove the mold. Let your bath bomb dry for approximately 48 hours.

Materials:

∙ 0,18 oz ( 5 gram ) jojoba oil
∙ 0,035 oz ( 1 gram ) beeswax
∙ 0,035 oz ( 1 gram ) sheabutter
∙ 0,07 oz ( 2 gram ) cocoabutter

Extra ingredients:
2 drops vitamine E
4 drops essential oil peppermint (anti-inflammatory)

Method:Gently heat the Jojoba oil, beeswax, sheabutter and cocoabutter in a double boiler until it's all the way melted. Do not heat above 70 degrees, so it is best to remove the jar from heat as the beeswax is melting.
Stir it slowly as the balm cools and turns into a nice emulsion.
Add the essential oils and vitamine E but make sure the mixture is below 40 degrees. Mix it up and place into a jar. Before placing the lid on the jar make sure the balm is cooled down to prevent condensation.
If you want to add some color to the lipbalm, you can add natural mica pigment powder. MirjamKruidenkunst

∙ 100 gram olive oil
∙ 50 gram (=1,76 oz) palm oil
∙ 100 gram coconut butter/oil
∙ 10 aloë vera leaves or 5 ml aloë vera oil/butter
∙ 1 teaspoon bentonite clay
∙ 1 teaspoon kaolin clay
∙ 1 tablespoon almond oil
∙ 1 tablespoon walnut oil
∙ 45 milligram natrium hydroxide
∙ 3 ml essential oil lavender (1 ml = 20 drops)

Method:4 weeks prior! ( if you use ready-made aloe vera oil, forget this step)Put the olive oil in a mason jar and add the aloe vera leaves/pieces. Make sure that de jar is filled till the top and that the aloe vera pieces stays below the oil. This makes that the active ingredients will be absorbed by the oil. Melt the sheabutter, coconut butter and palm oil until the mixture is liquid but keep the heat as low as possible. Add the olive oil and when you use aloe vera oil, this oil too. Then add the other ingredients (bentonite clay, kaolin clay, almond oil, walnut oil) except the natrium hydroxide. When de mixture has a smooth surface, dissolve the natrium hydroxide in a little water. Heat this up as the same temperature as the clay and oil mixture and then add the natrium hydroxide to it. Make sure it is well stirred with a hand blender. Give it a frequent stir during the cooling. As soon as the mixture is solid, pour into your shaving bowl. Leave it for 6 weeks in a low temperature area and your luxury shaving soap is ready to use. It’s a real treat!Kind regards,Jordy Zwaard

Material:

∙ 1 baking mold for cake/pie
∙ 1 piping/pastry bag
∙ 1 small pan
∙ 3 measuring cup
∙ 1 whisk
∙ 3lb 5 oz glycerin soap- melt&pour soap base transparent sweatfree
∙ 2lb 3,3 oz glycerin soap- melt&pour soap base white sweatfree
∙ 1 rebath soap base bar 100% natural
∙ 1 bottle ( 10ml ) fragrance oil for cosmetics orange
∙ 1 bottle ( 10ml ) fragrance oil for cosmetics cinnamon
∙ 1 orange slices (bag)
∙ 3 cinnamon sticks
∙ 1 bottle of cosmetic colorant brown
∙ 1 bottle of cosmetic colorant orange
∙ 1 bottle of cosmetic colorant yellow
∙ alcohol ketonatus 70%

Method:

∙ Slice 1kg of white glycerinsoap into small pieces and melt until it is all liquid. After that you can add the (preferred amount of) fragrance oil and use a few drops of brown colorant to color this layer. Try to add that much colorant so the color of the layer looks like cake.
∙ Spray some alcohol on the baking mold and pour the first layer of soap in the mold. Let this layer harden for about 20 minutes.
∙ Then melt 1kg of the transparent glycerin soap and again add the amount of fragrance you prefer. This layer is supposed to be brown-orange so gently add some brown / orange colorant to the soap. Spray some alcohol at the surface of the first soap-layer in the bakingmold and pour the second layer (brown-orange) on top of the first. Again, let it harden for 20 minutes.
∙ All the transparent glycerin soap that is left can be melted now and use the orange and yellow colorant to color this layer. Again, add the amount of fragrance you prefer.
∙ Make sure you spray the second layer with some alcohol before you pour the last (third) layer of soap.
∙ Let this harden for 4 hours.
∙ Take the rebatch bar, grate it down and add boiling water while stirring. Keep pouring water until the mixture has the texture of mash.
∙
∙ Remove the soap-pie from the baking mold and place it on a table or cakestand you can rotate. (Cake turntable).
∙ After you put the mixture in the pastry bag, you can start decorating the cake. The easiest way is to decorate is draw the piping bag from outward to the center. You can use a variety of piping tips to create different textures . Once the frosting is applicated you can break the cinnamon sticks, cut the oranges slices in 4 parts and decorate the cake.
∙ Let the cake rest for one night. he next day you can cut some nice slices.

The next day you can cut some nice slices.

TIP: you can use a mini bow for a perfect finish :) and don't forget to make a card that says: DO NOT EAT ME.

Use: for an aromatherapy burner, oil burner, wax burner. The soy wax is most suitable. Recipe for 100 melts.REC29

Material:

∙ 35 oz ( 1 kg ) soy wax
∙ 60 - 100 ml fragrance oil / perfume ( not waterbased ) or synergy* of essential oil.
∙ use 3% to 10% ( own preference )
∙ small rubber molds ( 0.35 - 0.5 oz ) of molds by First Impressions
∙ colorant for candles / melts ( oil-soluble ) or SQ Mica

*Synergies are essential oil blends that combine complementary essential oils to enhance the oils' therapeutic capabilities. When diffused, they produce beautiful, powerful aromas.

Method:

Make sure that the wax melts are the right size. Melts of 0,35oz will fit in most of the wax/oil burners.

Melt all of the soy wax in a pan ( or microwave) but don’t overheat, so no boiling. After melting, add the essential oils, the fragrance and colorant and stir it well. Pour into the molds and let the wax harden in a few hours. Pop the melts out of the molds . Now you can enjoy this lovely scent in your living room. Place one of the soy wax melts in a wax burner, add a tealight and enjoy the scent for about 8-10 hours. This soy wax does not splash or turns dry. The wax melts does not burn completely.

To replace the wax melt, allow the wax to solidify and pop out the used wax.

Tip: Create your own scent by combining multiple melts.

recipe - Brine soap ( soleseife cold proces )

REC30

Soleseife soap is a type of soap from Germany. It is made of (sea) salt water instead of demineralized water.

The difference between brine soap and a salt bar is that the salt is dissolved, not crystalline.

Material:

∙ 2,3 oz bath salts- sea salt fine grain, the amount of salt is 25% of the total amount of water.
∙ 9,4 oz demineralized water
∙ 3,5 oz natrium hydroxide (lye)
∙ 18 oz coconut oil
∙ 2 oz sheabutter

20% superfat

Method:

SAFETY INSTRUCTION:

I you have not used this cold proces before make sure you read the instructions carefully and do follow all of the safety instructions. There is a lot of information on the internet.

∙ Heat the water, slowly add the salt and let the salt dissolve.
∙ Weigh the Natrium Hydroxide in a measuring cup.
∙ Pour the saltwater (when the salt is all dissolved) in a heatresistant measuring cup.
∙ The lye should be slowly added to the water and stir until it is all dissolved
∙ (NEVER ADD WATER TO THE LYE)!!!
∙ It really takes a while for the lye to cool down to 40 degrees.
∙ In the meanwhile you can prepare the oils. Melt the coconut oil and add the sheabutter to the melted coconut oil. It is not necessary to continue heating as the heat of the coconut oil will melt the sheabutter.
∙ To speed up the cooling proces of the lye, you can put the mixture in the fridge.
∙ When both mixtures are cooled down to 40 degrees, put both the lye and the oils in a mixing bowl.
∙ Mix with a blender of mixer.
∙ When you can make a trail through the mixture that holds his shape, you can add fragrances and colorants. (I did not use them myself).
∙ Because the soap hardens very quickly, is wise to put them in separate molds.
∙ Leave them for 12-24 hours and remove them from the molds.
∙ After that, leave them 4-6 weeks!
∙ For decoration you can sprinkle some Himalaya salt on the soap.

Materials:

∙ 6,7 oz ( 190 gram ) glycerin soap transparent sweatfree
∙ 2,1 oz ( 60 gram ) sheabutter
∙ 2,1 oz ( 60 gram ) almond oil sweet
∙ 8,1 oz ( 230 gram ) fine sugar
∙ colorant ( optionally )
∙ fragrance oil or essential oil ( optionally )
∙ soap mold ( cake mold )

Method:

Put the sheabutter and the almond oil together in a pan on a low heat because shea butter will melt quickly. Make sure the ingredients are both well mixed and melted. Remove the pan from heat. Take a measuring cup and melt the glycerin soap ( maximum 20 seconds in the microwave (low heat). When it is not all the way melted, put it back in the microwave for 10 seconds. You can add colorant when the soap is melted, mix and add the essential oil to the soap. Don’t worry if you notice some oil on the surface. Just keep stirring until there is just a little bit of oil left on the surface, this will not effect the result. When you add the sugar, the mixture hardens within 20 seconds so make sure the mold is prepared before you finally add the sugar. You have to stir it very quickly and pour it into the cake mold. You can press a little when it is all in the mold and let it harden for a day. The next day you can take the block from the mold and cut into little cubes (2 cm x 2 cm).

Our natural base oils up to 1 liter are supplied in HDPE plastic bottles.HDPE is excellent recyclable.HDPE can be recognized by the following SPI Resin identification code:

HDPE is an abbreviation of High Density Polyetheen, or polyethylene high-density (PEHD) HDPE is a thermoplastic and is made under controlled conditions by applying intense heat to petroleum. A quarter of all manufactured polyetheen becomes HDPE. The remaining three-quarters is used for LDPE, another form of plastic that is softer and more flexible. Recycle HDPE plastic:HDPE plastic is a safe material and excellent recyclable because it is melted easily. This material consists of carbon and hydrogen. With the incineration of HDPE there will be no release of harmful substances. However it is still rewarding to segregate HPDE from your household waste. Collected HPDE products will be washed and ground to result in a granulate for plastics. Common uses of HDPE?HDPE is a rigid, strong, non-transparant, moisture resistant plastic that is used for plastic bottles and chemical containers, for example; soft drink bottles and shampoo. It is also used in products that are built to last, like toys and car parts. HPDE is not only a raw material for hard products but is also used for plastic bags and waste bags. Advantages HDPE over glass:∙ HDPE bottles are strong and lightweight at the same time.
∙ These bottles don’t damage during shipment or when used or fall.
∙ The lid is also recyclable, this is usually not the case with glass containers.
∙ The production of HDPE has a much lower CO2 emission. (If that's important to you.)
∙ A lower price because the production of glass has a CO2 tax.
